Three Rules of the Mind

I love the work that I do as a Rapid Transformational Therapist because I get to see my clients break through lifelong patterning that has negatively effected them.  When explaining the mind to groups or in workshops, there are a few rules my mentor, Marisa Peer, comprised over her 30 year career.   I share these rules here for you too!

Three Rules of the Mind

Your mind does exactly what it thinks you want it to do and what it absolutely believes is in your very best interest.

If there's anything in your life that you haven't got, and you really want, your mind thinks you don’t want it "You think you want it, but I know better."

So let's give an example. You’re eight years old and you're reading out in class. And you're reading about the stomach. And as you get to stomach, you go, "Stomach," [as it’s spelled] or you're reading spinach and you go, "Spinnitch." And everyone laughs at you and you feel really upset and you go bright red and they laugh at you even more. Now your mind is searching, "What's caused this pain?"

Because here's another rule of the mind. You survive on the planet by avoiding pain.

We survive on the planet by avoiding pain. We go to stroke a dog, it bites us, we don't go near dogs again. We get poisoned by an oyster, we never go near them again. Your mind's job is to keep you alive on the planet, and it keeps you alive by searching for whatever caused you pain, and then deciding, "Let's not go there." So when you’re 5 or 6 and you’ve only been only the planet a few years, you make decisions. "I'm never going to speak in public. Oh, I'm never going to get pregnant and have a baby. That woman in the Western I saw on TV died giving birth. Oh, men always leave and break your heart." Or, "If you have nice things, people don't like you."

It doesn't matter what these beliefs are, some are random, some are very powerful. But your mind's job is to keep you alive by avoiding pain. The only way it can possibly know what causes you pain is what you tell it. And once you tell it things, it locks onto them.

The second thing about your mind, and it's so easy, is that your mind only responds to two things ever, the pictures you make in your head and the words you say to yourself.

Your mind responds to the pictures you make in your head and the words you say to yourself, and the great news is you can change them at any time, but your words become your reality.

If I sit in front of you with a massive hypodermic needle and shoved it in my arm, there's at least four different images you can make. "Ew, ew, ew, a needle. That looks horrible, that looks painful." That's one, or, "Oh, I'm in so much pain. That needle's going to take away my pain. I really need that pain medication." That's two. Here's another one: "Oh, I’m a body builder, if I inject myself with steroids, I'm going to get really muscle-ey and win Mr. Universe." Here's a fourth one: "When I put that needle in, I'm injecting myself with an anti-aging serum. I'm going to look 15 years younger. Yeah, I can't wait." There are so many different images you can make!  Just remember, your mind responds to two things, the pictures you make in your head and the words you say to yourself.

So here's the third thing about the brain.

The mind loves what is familiar and it really doesn't like unfamiliar, and if you left it to its own devices, it wants to go back and back and back to what is familiar, and it wants to avoid what is unfamiliar. If you want success you have got to make what is familiar unfamiliar and what's unfamiliar, familiar.

An example of this is lottery winners who go bankrupt in 2 years. What is familiar to them is “I get money on Friday and I run out by Thursday, because I've got to pay the bills and pay the heating and buy the food, and by Thursday there's nothing left.”  When somebody wins the lottery or suddenly gets a lot of money, they do the same thing. They just spend it all. Investments are a foreign territory, and saving the money or investing the money is unfamiliar to their minds. Their minds just have not been programmed yet to think of an abundance of money in a different way!
